New York local phone service providers have been the target of a lawsuit filed in state court. The lawsuit alleges that Verizon Communications Inc. overcharged landline subscribers by $200 million. The company also allegedly added between $1.4 billion and $2 billion in annual expenses to its bill. In addition, the company stopped upgrading its networks in New York City between 2010 and 2012.

Rate increases
A Democratic state assemblyman is calling on the state Legislature to prevent utility rate hikes until they receive approval from the legislature. With the rising cost of energy this winter, many customers are facing steep increases in their bills. The recent war in Ukraine and uncertainty around the world are contributing to the increase in energy costs. But a new law in New York would block utility rate increases until the state legislature gives its blessing.
The Public Service Commission must notify its customers before any rate hikes or delivery charge increases take effect. But it does not have to notify customers about supply-side changes. Last fall, the PSC and utilities predicted average supply charges of $43 per month. Because fossil fuel prices fluctuate depending on market conditions, increasing supply is an attempt to stabilize prices during times of high demand.
Improvements to basic phone service
Improvements to basic phone service in New York are not new. In fact, the idea of a basic phone was first developed in the 1850s by Italian entrepreneur Antonio Meucci. It was later developed by Charles Bourseul. Alexander Graham Bell, however, took it one step further and won a patent for it in 1876. He began research into the new device as early as 1874, and was later given financial backers to help him with his project.
Funding for mental health services
Funding for mental health services in the City of New York comes from government agencies. According to data from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, over $376 million in contracts and grants were awarded to community-based organizations in 2015. This funding allows organizations to provide mental health care to underserved populations without fear of losing insurance reimbursement.
The announcement comes from the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York, a nonprofit organization that raises money for de Blasio’s initiatives, including mental health. The organization says the money will help local mental health services and support research. This program will give local health care providers more resources to hire staff and provide more services to low-income residents.
